A halfback, Tonu'u represented Wellington and Auckland at a provincial level and the and in Super Rugby. Of Samoan parentage, Tonu'u played 14 matches including five tests for Samoa in 1992 and 1993. He was later a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, from 1996 to 1998.
